Organizing Legos & Lego Duplos

I always feel like I struggle to find ways to organize and store all the kids toys’ so that our house doesn’t feel like a toy store. Especially toys like Legos & Lego Duplos that have so many little pieces, parts and instructions to keep track of.

The system that I have been using and that has worked really well for us is just a simple basket/box type container and using zip-lock type bags to hold all the pieces and the instructions for each set.

I decided to reuse a cardboard box as my basket/box instead of buying a new basket. I really liked the idea of reusing something that I already had and to pick out the fun colors/patterns/designs for the covering of the box.

I found some great instructions on how to make your own fabric storage boxes at Instructables.com.

For my boxes, I picked out fabric that I liked from Hobby Lobby, but you could also look at Michael’s or Joann’s. I choose a pattern that I really liked for the outside and then picked a complimenting color for the inside.

My first attempt in making my boxes was a little of a struggle… as you’ll notice from the video! I didn’t have the correct knife for cutting and I don’t have any hot glue or a staple gun. I just used scissors and lots of Mod Podge!

One other thing that I would do differently next time around is to add some fabric to the bottom of the box. The instructions that I followed did mention to do this, but at the time I thought “why bother”. The bottom of the box doesn’t show so why spending the time to cover it. Well I learned real quick that covering the bottom helps to keep the box from rubbing on the shelve that we set them on. We now have a few little scratch marks on that shelve from the boxes. Lesson learned!

The Lego and Lego Duplo sets I just store in zip-lock type baggies. The storage bag on the right is really nice as well. It’s just something I picked up at the Dollar Tree that I was originally going to us to store some puzzles, but the puzzle ended up being too wide to fit in the zipper bag so it ended up working really well for the Legos.

And there you have it!! That is my organization system for storing our Lego and Lego Duplo sets. I’ll also be sharing some time how we organize and store the toys that are in our living room. Our living room is the first room you walk into when you enter our front door so I’ve been trying my best not to make it look like you just walked into a toy store! 🤪

I hope this little tip will make a difference for you and your family! Please leave a comment to let me know how this has worked for you or any other toy organizing hack that you have found to work well for you and your family!
